About the settlement of Delano
Named after Ezra Delano (a land agent who migrated from Maine in 1886), Delano was an early Whitney Twp settlement. It had a two-room schoolhouse that functioned from 1897 to 1965. It remains as a local landmark. Michigan State University holds the “Merton J. Whitman memoirs and History of the Delano Settlement 1887-1900.” Today, Delano remains as a residential and agricultural community near Au Gres, in the vicinity of the intersection of North Delano Road and West Whitman Road, with most properties on Delano Road.
